π NHS Pharmacy First β Ear Infection Assessment & Treatment
π©Ί Ear Infection (Acute Otitis Media) β NHS Service
An ear infection (acute otitis media) is a common condition, especially in children. It occurs when the middle ear becomes inflamed, often following a cold or upper respiratory infection.
π Symptoms can include ear pain, fever, irritability, and temporary hearing changes.
π₯ Through the NHS Pharmacy First service, eligible patients can be assessed and treated by a pharmacist without needing a GP appointment.
π₯ Who Can Use This Service?
This service may be suitable if:
β The patient is aged 1 to 17 years
β Symptoms started within the last 7 days
β Symptoms are mild to moderate
β There are no signs of complications
π©Ί A pharmacist will carry out a structured clinical assessment to confirm whether treatment can be provided.
π Important Age Criteria
The NHS Pharmacy First ear infection pathway is designed for children and young people aged 1β17.
π¨ββοΈ Adults with ear pain or suspected infection should contact their GP or NHS 111 for assessment.
If symptoms relate to blocked ears rather than infection, an ear wax removal service may be more appropriate.
