Sinusitis occurs when the sinuses become inflamed, often following a cold or upper respiratory infection. This can lead to pressure, facial pain, congestion, and headaches.

π₯ Through the NHS Pharmacy First service, eligible patients can be assessed and treated by a pharmacist without needing to see a GP.
π₯ Who Is Eligible for This Service?
You may be able to use this service if:
β You are aged 12 years or over
β Your symptoms started within the last 10 days
β Symptoms are not severe or rapidly worsening
β There is no swelling around the eyes or forehead
β You are not significantly unwell
π©Ί A pharmacist will carry out a private consultation to confirm whether treatment under this service is appropriate.

Common symptoms include:
π Facial pressure or pain (cheeks, forehead, around the eyes)
π€§ Nasal congestion or blockage

π€ Headache
π¦· Toothache or upper jaw discomfort
π Reduced or altered sense of smell

Sinusitis is often viral in the early stages, meaning antibiotics are not always needed.

You should seek medical attention if:

β You experience severe headache, confusion, or vision changes
β You have frequent or ongoing sinus infections
If necessary, the pharmacist will arrange appropriate referral.

The Pharmacy First service builds on the NHS Community Pharmacist Consultation Service which has run since October 2019. The consultation service enables patients to be referred into community pharmacy for a minor illness or an urgent repeat medicine supply.
