🧫 NHS Pharmacy First – Impetigo Assessment & Treatment

🩺 Impetigo Treatment in Prescot

At Prescriptions Pharmacy, we provide NHS Pharmacy First assessment and treatment for impetigo, a common bacterial skin infection.

🧫 Impetigo is highly contagious and most often affects children, although adults can also be affected. It typically appears around the nose and mouth but can occur anywhere on the body.

🏥 Through the NHS Pharmacy First service, eligible patients can be assessed and treated by a pharmacist without needing to see a GP.

👥 Who Is Eligible?

This service may be suitable if:

✅ The patient is aged 1 year or over

✅ The infection is localised and mild to moderate

✅ There are no signs of systemic illness

✅ The condition is not recurrent or widespread

🩺 A private consultation will confirm whether treatment can be safely provided under Pharmacy First.

🔍 Recognising Impetigo

Impetigo often presents with:

🔴 Red sores or blisters that break easily

🍯 Golden or honey‑coloured crusting

😖 Itching, irritation, or mild discomfort

👃 Commonly affects the face, hands, or exposed skin

The infection spreads easily through close contact or touching affected areas, so early treatment and good hygiene are important.

💊 How We Support You

If appropriate, the pharmacist may:

🩺 Assess the affected area and confirm diagnosis

💊 Provide topical or oral antibiotic treatment where appropriate

🧼 Give advice on hygiene and skin care

🚫 Explain how to reduce transmission to others

📤 Refer to another healthcare provider if needed

🔒 All consultations are private and confidential.

⚠️ When to Seek Further Medical Advice

Pharmacy First may not be appropriate if:

❌ The infection is widespread or severe

❌ The patient has a fever or feels unwell

❌ The condition is recurrent

❌ There are signs of deeper skin infection

❌ The patient is immunocompromised

If needed, we will ensure appropriate referral for further medical care.
